Happy Hounds opened in 2009! After working at another salon and gaining my qualifications I decided I wanted to open a grooming salon that was not just a production line but a more personal, Homely and a more relaxing experience for the dogs to be happily groomed.
I do my grooming in an outbuilding at the rear of the house, this used to be an old wash house in the Victorian times.
This is how the outside looked upon opening my doors in Dec 2009
This is how the interior looked in Dec 2009.
It may not look that great, but I had all the equipment I needed to get started with my grooming.
you can see the original Victorian brick floor, and my goodness was it cold on your feet to work in : )
On the opposite side of the room I had my booster bath, and a brand new stove fire in its original placing, to keep me and hounds warm over the winter months
after a very successful start to my business and making friends with some lovely dogs and customers, Disaster struck in the 2010 Winter!
The old Lead water pipe froze and burst underground, it flooded the grooming room and so we had to dig a hole and replace the broken pipe with a nice new plastic one!
Arrrggg just look at my nice room :(
The old Victorian bricks were then dug up and a new concrete floor was laid.
making it much warmer on my feet to work on
During the winter months I also came to realize there was a few leaks in the roof, due to some of the slate tiles having moved there was no roofing insulation or lining meaning I got a little wet when it rained : (
this is a picture of the roof before it came off!
And so the roof came off - (this was quite nerve wracking as it left the building quite exposed and was a risk of the apex collapsing)
But all was fine, the new lining was put on, along with new slate tiles and insulation boards on the inside.
After a good tidy up and fresh lick of paint, this is how the grooming room looks from the outside today!
The picture on your right is the old flimsy doors and the new doors on your left, much more secure : )
as we close in on 2012 I couldn't be happier with how my business is going, I have just over 200 regular customers, and both 2 legged and 4 legged are lovely, we have a great relationship, I treat every dog as if it were my own, providing a home from home, calm and relaxing environment for your hound to be groomed.
a vast improvement from when I first opened.
I now have a electric table that goes up and down so the bigger dogs can jump on and off, and lifted up safely, and also the new stainless steel electric bath can hold some of the bigger breeds more safely, also lifting up and down.
There is a temporary lino floor, and the fire has been lifted off the ground to make it more safer for my fou legged friends.
We are now nearing the end of 2013 and what a year it has been!! looking back through the history here, makes me realise how far we have come, and I couldn't of done it without all my wonderful 2 legged and 4 legged friends. we have been busy and the refurb is now nearly complete, we have grown from a garden shed into a beautiful doggie salon.
The old rotten, wooden window has now been replaced with a smart double glazed pvc window, making it much warmer and safer, the special frosted glass not only stops my cat sitting at the window winding up the dogs, but is actually light reflective making it much brighter inside the salon.
Although I liked how the brick walls gave a rustic feeling to this old wash house, giving it character as to what it once was, all those years ago, unfortunately it was not practical, all the dead undercoat and dirt blasted out would stick to the walls, they were cold and damp and cleaning seemed an impossible task - and so the walls were battened out and insulated so that the new shiny wall cladding could be fixed.
After a week of hard work it was finally complete, the walls in black and white gloss glitter not only look fantastic but are hygienic, they can be easily washed down, clean of any hair and debris, making this a proper doggie parlour in which your hounds can be groomed.
New lighting makes it much brighter and is easier for me to see especially in the dark winter months for the hounds with darker coats.
The cold concrete floor has had extra damp proof membrane put down, along with a nice thick lino making it much warmer on my feet and the doggie paws, looks fantastic and again easier to keep clean.
extra sockets, new shower and finally I'm able to display all my certificates for you all to see so .......................
here is Happy Hounds Pet grooming parlour today!!!
Isn't it fantastic!!!! its a pleasure working in here grooming all my lovely hounds, I want to say a massive thank you to all who helped in getting my room complete, being on old building it was not easy, but most of all thanks to all my lovely customers for being patient whilst the works were being carried out, and I shall look forward to many many years of grooming in here xxx
I think that brings 2013 to a close and I'm overjoyed with everything I have achieved, and I will look forward to working in here through the winter and esp. the coming christmas months, but im not finished
2014 has been a busy one - working hard in our fabulous new salon, which a year on still looks as fab as it did when we first finished, perhaps more equipment and a few changes, a new side board is still yet to be installed and the new phone line installed, we have been so busy this year we've hardly had time to get jobs done, we did hold the first ever happy hounds dog show which was a huge success - please see page for more information, we have also updated our kennel and the floor is now tiled and the outside run covered in astro turf making it much more homely,
after - bit more secure
2015 has been a busy year, our main achievements this year has been the Happy Hounds Calendar competition via our Facebook page, it was very popular, every month customers voted for there favourite groom and winners got a free groom and photo shoot to be in the happy hounds 2016 calendar, every month the calendar features a fun fact and a voucher to spend at happy hounds, if you still havnt got one, you can purchase these at the salon for £10 my other main achievement this year was getting first place in the asian fusion class at master groom. i was soo proud, all my hard work paid off, coco the cockerpoo was amazing and with help from my grooming assistant we took the gold. the salon is still looking like new from the re-ferb and has made life much easier - so easy to clean, however as we are growing all the time, space is getting a bit tight, we have updated the fencing panels and new side board in the salon. 2015 has been very successful and as previously mentioned we are gaining new customers and growing all the time, Emma is attending college once a week and is perfecting her grooming skills as well as gaining her icmg grooming qualification, Hannah our saturday girl is also doing very well and sailing through her animal care course at rodbaston, I have a strong team at the moment of which i am proud off and look forward to 2016.
2016 - This year we held our 2nd novelty dog show, it was a huge success. There was stalls, tombola, dog photo booth, agility, grooming demos, food, local business's, and fun games amongst the high entry of dogs into the classes. it was great fun and we raised a staggering £1000 which was donated back to the village hall to help with refurbishments. our next dog show event will be 2018.
we also had our first ever Christmas Santa paws event. this was late in the year , stalls and food were on offer whilst your hounds had there photo taken with Santa in the grotto. we didn't manage to raise any funds this time but we had great fun, met some lovely people and there dogs and really got in the Christmas spirit, we will do another next year and hopefully it will be busier, bigger and better.
Emma completed her salon details icmg and is continuing her education. currently under my wing she is improving and producing some lovely grooms.
Sadly we didn't enter any competitions this year, we have been waiting to move into our bigger premises but unfortunately we have had many complications and set backs so we are a little stuck in a rut with everything on hold until we move. as we move into 2017 we are still not in the new premises, but hopefully we will be soon and we can offer your hounds more of a spa experiance.
However we have been busy grooming and its been a pleasure making all your hounds look beautiful so thanks to all our customers for there patience and loyalty.
2018 - we have finally moved into our new premises - a different location as after a 2 year battle with planning permission and continual problems with the building, it was not meant to be, this was a big blow as equipment had been brought and 2 years had passed.
we havefound a new location sadly not as big which has meant we are unable to offer the hydrotherapy as we had hoped or be able to be the big grooming school we had wanted. but we do have an amazing new state of the art salon with more space and can still offer training to newbie groomers or those wanting to learn more about grooming there own dog one to one.
please see the salon section to see the amazing new salon and all its new equipment, now we are in here we are hoping it will give hannah more space to groom which she is doing brilliantly at, meanwhile emma is still on maternity leave. i will be getting back into the competition side and hoping hannah will also be entering s few, along with still needing to complete my city and guilds which i had to take a step back from with all the salon building.
we are excited to start a new chapter and see what 2018 has to bring xx
